MATH 101: Math for STEM

Program
Semester Hours 3.0

This course is offered as a suggested co-requisite course for students enrolled in BIOL/CHEM 100 who need extra Math support.  The course is designed to teach both mathematical content and study skills needed for success in BIOL/CHEM 100.  Topics covered will include an introduction to variable expressions and equations, scientific notation, simplifying expressions, solving linear equations, graphing linear equations, solving systems of equations, exponents, solving proportions, unit conversions, and dimensional analysis.

If a student has passed PreCalculus or Calculus, in high school or college, or passes any college Math class (above developmental level) with at least a C-, that student should be placed in a higher level Math course and not in Math 101, regardless of their enrollment in BIOL/CHEM 100.  Placement tests will be given in the first week of classes before add/drop to ensure that Math 101 is the appropriate math placement for individual students initially enrolled.

This course does not meet the math requirement for any major.

Corequisites

BIOL 100 or CHEM 100.
